When your hamster is expecting, it’s important that you clean her cage a week at latest before the birth. This is because once she has had the litter; you won’t be able to touch the cage until the pups are 21 days old. Try to make sure that you don't disturb her too much. Also try to refrain from Hoovering or playing loud music.
To stop the chance of smell, due to the fact you can't clean her out, be sure to put in more than the normal amount of wood shavings and bedding. Have a look at my Bedding page for ideas.
Once mating has taken place, I'd keep the dad with the pregnant mum up until the baby Robo's are 14 days old. He helps to bring her food while she’s nursing and someone she can socialize with during her pregnancy. He will also look after the pups while mum takes a break to get water or to have a run in the wheel. But bare in mind, sometimes it is best to remove the dad after mating or just before the birth. Sometimes females get very aggressive and may hurt or kill him if she see's him as a threat.
If you do remove the male, take the wheel out just before the birth so the female doesn't accidentally trip and land awkwardly on her belly, as this could damage the unborn pups. You can put the wheel back in once the pups are 21 days old. If you put it in earlier, one of the babies may be inside it, and if mum decides she wants to have a go too, the baby will literally go flying!
