When sexing your hamsters, hold them by the scruff on the back of their neck behind their ears, like their mum would do when they were pups. This will not hurt them! They should "play dead" and stay still for a little while. Make sure not to hold their ears though! Because they are very wriggly, you may find it easier to put them in a clean box and look from underneath. Though results may not be as accurate.
Both sex's have two openings. On the female these openings will be very close together and may even look like just one. On the male they will be further apart. Also, the male will usually have a visible scent gland above the two openings, which would appear like a yellow scabbed area. Another sign is the noticeably large testicles at the rear of him.
