The Roborovski hamster (Phodopus Roborovskii) belongs to the Dwarf family. There are many types of dwarf hamsters. The most popular one is the Djungarian/Siberian hamster, more commonly known as the Russian hamster or Winter Campbell. There's also the Chinese hamster, which has no other names of which I am aware of.
The Roborovski hamsters were first discovered by Lt. Vsevolod Roborovski in 1894 during an expedition in July, and weren't introduced to pet shops in the UK until the late 90's.
They originate from western and southern Mongolia, parts of northern China, some areas of Russia and in parts of Manchuria, living in semi-desert landscapes and building tunnels at an incredible 2 meters deep! Due to the dryness of their natural habitat, they would need to limit urine to tackle hydration. Thanks to this, it makes the Roborovski home; smell free!
Their bodies are between 4-5cm long, making them the smallest hamster family around. They weigh roughly 22-26 grams; have 4 toes on each front paw and 5 toes on each hind paw. Their legs are fairly long which help them to run at incredible speeds of 20 miles in 8 ½ hours per night!
Their coat is sandy brown in colour with cute white eyebrows and belly. They are the only dwarf to lacks a dorsal stripe!
